The Poop Saga

Today marks the end of a 9-day-long poop boycott, and we are very, very grateful. For reasons not understood, Zoey held onto everything she ate for NINE DAYS (can you imagine?) and finally let it loose this afternoon. She didn't appear to be in any discomfort or pain during The Situation and was pretty much her happy smiley self the whole time. It became an obsession for Jason and I, however, and actual worry set in at about Day 7.

I took her in for a chiropractic adjustment on Friday when the doc next to our office suggested that she had done lumbar adjustments for other babies and they've been pooping before they left the office. That did not work as immediately as I had mentally prepared myself for. I gave her a fairly deep abdominal massage yesterday (Day 8) as well as some plum/banana/oats (all foods that are supposed to help with moving things out) which she finished up this morning. We were going to try an Epsom salt bath for the bottom this morning, but I got called away to a couple of births, and by the time I got home this afternoon I had a whole lot of milk for her! She had a big meal and took a nap, and when she woke up... poo-poo!! Certainly not nine days worth yet, but definitely a good start. We would have resorted to suppositories tomorrow if it went that long, but we're glad that we didn't have to.

I'm sure there is more to update you all on, but we're going to bed now. I was up all night with a birth, with another one right on its heels this afternoon with lots of excitement, and I'm ready to hit the sack with my baby girl. Happy Poo-Poo Day!

Oh, teeth...

Zoey has not one, but TWO more teeth coming in simultaneously this week. Ugh, poor thing! Both teeth are coming in beside the four front teeth that are already there, although they are on opposite sides: the lower left and the upper right. She's been a bit cranky and the cheeks are sometimes really red, and she's been gnawing on her finger non-stop. Last night was pretty rough, up four times to nurse. Although it's hard to be up with her that often, my compassion for her situation makes it a little easier, and she pretty much goes right back to sleep... but mommies and daddies don't get much restful sleep when it comes in 1 1/2 - 2 hour chunks...

We had a bit of a setback in our exploration of foods last week. I had given her a new combo meal of sweet peas, turkey and wild rice (prior to this she had only had single veggies or fruit), and about two hours after I fed it to her she projectile vomited three times, quite dramatically. So... we're back to single foods again for a while, which is fine.

I think she's getting close to signing "milk" -- she's now clapping each time I mention it to her. Stay tuned!

A few videos

Peek-a-boo!
Zoey really got going on the giggles when we played this game. She likes to pull the blanket up over her head and play peek-a-boo, but sometimes she'd pull it up too far and I could still see her face when she was supposed to be hiding. So I'd say "whoops!" and it would just send her into fits.

Clapping her hands
This is a recent development and she likes to practice it a lot, even when it doesn't really match her mood. It's funny to see her getting fussy and then clap her hands once or twice... Anyway, this little clip was taken on an afternoon when she was in a good mood and feeling silly.

Awake from her nap
This is the sight that we are often finding when she wakes up from her naps. Note the scrunched up nose with the snorting -- this is how she displays excitement these days!
